CD OF THE
MONTH
One of our Board
Members , Jason Whitener, has been putting out
CD's for the club and he hasn't really been
getting a lot of press. He tried something new
this month and I want to reward his dedication
and his hard work. He gave a copy of the disk to
me for review. The disk is a compilation of
utilities, games and everything else that was
put out by the Trinidad-Tobago users group. It
has a bunch of good stuff and I actually
installed the FOLDER SIZE program on my machine
as soon as I saw what it did. It adds the
ability to show a column in Windows Explorer or
My Computer that shows you the size of your
folders. After I installed it I found a program
directory that had been filled with temp files
that were eating up 10 GB of my hard drive from
over a year ago. It is simple and very useful!
It also had the WinDirStat program I like to use
to find out what is using up my space. It is a
great disk and Jason should be thanked for
sharing it with us. He should be, but, he won't
be unless you do it. Make sure you stop by and
get the disk and then thank him for me...
LAST
Month's DEMO
Shawn Travers,
from Microsoft, gave us a sneak peak at the new
Windows Vista RC1 and he explained why it will
be a good upgrade from XP. I think he did a
great job and we all saw how Vista should make
the techie's work a little easier. If we can
lock the normal people out of the stuff that
they tend to have problems with and the internet
browser stops the unknown threats from getting a
foothold on the machines of the future, we all
should have more free time to do hardware
upgrades for people who want to use the new Aero
Glass look on their machines. I really do think
that the new Vista looks nice and seems like it
will help everyone avoid some of the bad stuff
that we experience every day with XP...
HOLIDAY
PARTY PRIZES
I've got a bunch
of prizes. If you have any ideas for a "Big"
prize, please let me know. We may give away our
camcorder if we get approval to get one that
uses DVD's. Remind me to bring this up at the
meeting...
PROGRESSIVE RAFFLE
Our
progressive raffle was up to $325
and we gave it all away. We'll start over at
$100 and see what happens this month. Thanks to
everyone who played and good luck this month. As
usual, we'll have five small prize winners in
our monthly raffle. They'll get their small
prize and a chance to pick a card from the deck
in hopes of getting the Joker. There are only 53
cards left in the deck counting the joker. Make
sure you are at the club meeting and that your
dues are paid up to get a chance at the $25 and
the $100 and the great prizes. Good luck.
GCC Oct.
2006 Minutes by Carlos Mariles
/ Secretary to the Stars
President Mike Taphorn opened the meeting at 7
PM and first of all introduced himself and
welcome the membership, new members and guests.
The first item in the agenda was to accept
nominations from the floor to run for any or all
the positions that the board has to offered.
After intensive decisions the nominations are as
follow:
President: Mike Taphorn
Vice: Jim Tomlinson
Secretary: Carlos Mariles
Treasurer: Charles Wallace
Membership Chairmen: JC Spelce
Librarian: Jason Whitener
Webmaster: Steven Gilroy
Newsletter
Editor : Dennis McMurtrey
Corp. Sponsor: Bob Havlin
During our next general membership meeting, if
no new nominations are added or deleted, a vote
will be taken to elect the new officers.
It was decided during the board meeting held on
Nov. 1, that after the elections are finalized,
we are going to have a “Swap meet” so bring your
items or your fat wallet so you can take
advantage of this opportunity that everybody
enjoys three times a year. There was also a
discussion about trying to recruit new members
so we can increase the present membership. Mike
brought up the subject of our last meeting of
the month when we have our meeting/dinner. The
membership was asked to bring some side dishes
to compliment the sandwiches that the club is
going to sponsor.
The Q & A meeting followed and this time lasted
for about 15 minutes only.
The nightly presentation was introduced by Shawn
Travers a Technologist specialist from the local
Microsoft regional office. Shawn explained in
detail the new Windows Vista overview. About
three quarters of membership attended the
meeting
Our next meeting will be held at the same
location at 7 PM on Nov. 15, 06
I decided to re-release this open source
compilation of software, due to it’s being
updated and since it is a complete software
package, I thought it would be good to post an
updated package. The ISO was so large, that I
was unable to package my normal monthly updates,
but as many of the software packages haven’t
updated in several months(other than virus
definitions packages being updated), I didn’t
feel it was too much of a loss.
This is an excellent packaging of the best in
OpenSource/Shareware software. The software has
custom boot screens that can allow the
installation/de-installation of all the software
packages from a window in Internet Explorer or
Firefox, or other browsers as the case may be.
There are many streamlined features about this
package, and I hope some of you will put it to
good use.
This disk is disk #84 and will be the Nov. 2006
Disk-of-the-month.
Thanx and I hope to see you all at the meeting.
