I hope you
turned off your computers and made sure that all
the Mom's had a great Mother's Day. Now, turn
them back on and make sure you make it to this
month's GCC meeting...
FLASHLIGHTS ARE HERE !
We sold out of
the last shipment of flashlights in a relatively
short amount of time. Sooo... We ordered a bunch
more to make sure we don't run out as fast as we
did last time. If you wanted some and we ran out
of them, make sure you stop by and get some this
Wednesday.
MAY DEMO IS...DENNIS McMURTREY's FIREFOX PLUG-IN
EXTRAVAGANZA& YOUR FAVORITE PLUG-INS AND
WEBSITES
Dennis is going
to review his favorite FIREFOX Browser Plug-Ins.
Plug-Ins are small programs that allow your
browser to do things on websites that a plain
old browser would not be able to do. He is going
to share some of his favorites and then we are
going to use the browser that we outfitted with
all the plug-ins to cruise over to some of our
favorite sites. Please bring any plug-ins that
you like and a list of your favorite websites to
the meeting. It is going to be an interactive
demo and we want everyone to share their
favorite tools and sites with the rest of the
club. No adults only sites at the meeting. Wait
until after the demo to share those....
PROGRESSIVE RAFFLE
Our progressive
raffle is up to $200
and we'll try to give the jackpot away again
this month. As usual, we'll have five small
prize winners in the raffle and they'll get to
pick a card from the deck in hopes of getting
the Joker. There are 33 cards left in the
deck. Good luck. It should be getting easier to
win every month...
SUMMER BAR-B-QUE
We're having a
Bar-B-Que at the club meeting in June. The Club
will buy the meat and we'll have a side dish
sign up sheet at this meeting. We were thinking
that we may have a Bar-B-Que and a Swap Meet so
everyone stays busy at the meeting. We'll start
at 6:00 like our Christmas Party and Fun will be
had by all.... Let me know what you think...
Well, as many
of you know I wasn't able to make it either to
the regular club meeting, nor the last 2 Board
meetings.
My work has had some scheduling conflicts which
have not allowed me to be there and I'm sorry
for not being there to support the library in my
capacity. I'm going to release the disk I was
working on for last month, to coincide with what
Chuck's Demo was going to be about. The disk is
yet another utility disk, that is full of all
kinds of useful utilities.
I have a variety of things that directly pertain to aspects of what I
think Chuck demo'd last month. I have
benchmarking software, directory utilities,
driver update utilities, network optimizers,
registry cleaners, as well as the monthly
updates that I include with every disk release.
I've also included some files that people have
requested in months past, like some
diagramming/flowcharting programs (I had
someone, but I can't remember who that requested
something like this.),
Internet Radio/TV programs (for viewing internet
broadcasts with ease.), Photo editing software,
Undelete/recovery programs, and even some Video
to PSP converters (for converting video to a
Play station Portable compatible format.
I've also added a couple of new programs to the
monthly updates programs. One of these is a
Rootkit scanner/killer. This is a new kind of
security threat, and I thought it prudent to
include these on a monthly basis. If you are
not sure of it's use, just Google rootkit and
I'm sure there will be a ton of information
explaining this issue much better than I can in
this column. I'm also including the most recent
updates for the Autopatcher program(the april
release)
I'm sure I've missed some programs or files that
some are looking for, so if I have please let me
know and I'll be happy to look into them for
you.
The following extensions for Firefox are the
ones I have installed on my PC. I use some of
them constantly others once in a while. Below
are the names and direct links to their firefox
info pages and downloads. Check them out..cause
I will be demonstrating them at this Wednesday
Club meeting.
HOW TO INSTALL UBUNTU.
Comprehensive guide, everything anyone needs to
know about installing Ubuntu.
Looks like this dude has put a huge chapter of a
book he's written online... and it's FREE :-)
Democracy player -- a
free
and open Internet TV client -- Democracy
combines VLC, BitTorrent and RSS to make a
simple, elegant system for discovering,
retrieving and viewing video. It's intended to
provide a platform for indie and alternative TV,
and it works equally well for TV from mainstream
outlets. Released Linux Binaries.
On the chance some of you read the newsletter but not the GCC emails,
I will add this info : Incredibly Useful Tweak
If you haven't had to do this already, then some day, some time, you almost
surely will: You'll want or need to pull a file off a sick PC. If the hard
drive is formatted in NTFS, you'll normally have to jump through hoops to
get at the files and to move them safely to, say, a floppy drive or other
location. It can be done, but it often involves extra steps and perhaps
using a completely different OS (on CD or flash drive) to accomplish the
task.
But with one simple tweak, you can use XP itself, natively. The tweak gives
you simple, direct, DOS-like access to your entire hard drive, and lets you
move, copy, delete, or otherwise manage any file, anywhere on the drive.
Want to move stuff to or from a floppy? No problem! Need to replace a
corrupted file with a fresh copy? Piece o' cake. Want to act on a whole
range of files or folders, using a simple "wildcard' command, such as using
*.exe to represent all exe files? Easy!
