Our next meeting
is two days before St. Patrick's Day. Remember
to get out your green clothes and wear them to
the meeting. I'll probably forget, so make sure
you wear yours...
MARCH DEMO IS...
CYBERCRIME and HOW TO AVOID IT
Bob Young, is a
local Sheriff's Deputy for Monroe county that
was recently been assigned to the Cybercrime
Metro-East Div. Federal task force division and
will share his knowledge with us at this month's
meeting.
Bob had a canine partner in the past and he has
a bunch of good stories about his exploits with
his partner and how they attempted to curtail
the flow of anhydrous ammonia to the Meth Labs.
His new assignment is right up his alley. He has
been using and building and fixing computers
since early 80's. Make sure you are good at the
meeting or he might demonstrate his take down
techniques... Make sure you thank Bob for taking
the time to come to our club and share his
knowledge...
PROGRESSIVE RAFFLE
Our progressive
raffle is up to $150
and we'll try to give the jackpot away again
this month. As usual, we'll have five winners in
the raffle and they'll get to pick a card from
the deck in hopes of getting the Joker.
CD CLEARANCE SALE
Jason was pretty
successful in selling the large collections of
CD's. He is going to continue his sale at our
March meeting. Make sure you stop by and see him
at the meeting and check out his bargain
basement pricing....
PICTURES / BADGES
Bob Butz's has
figured out the badge making process and
recreated the templates that we used to make
them in the past. He will be taking pictures of
everyone that needs a badge photo. If you need a
badge or have recently renewed, please show up,
coordinate with Bob and smile real big for the
camera...
President Mike Taphorn
opened the meeting at 7:00 pm on 15 Feb. 06 at
the Caseyville township building. The
president first order of business was to welcome
the general membership, new members and guests.
He first apologized to everyone because our
night’s presenter was sick like a canine.
Mike continued to explain about the new protocol
concerning the assistance of the members at the
computer’s boot at the computer show which will
be held at the Collinsville center.
He also discussed the new
section in our club’s computer page where
members can displace their business.
President Taphorn also explained the new
amendments to our door prize.
Bob Butz brought up the
problems that are facing with the club’s badges.
He said that it is a minor set back and the he
is working on it to have the new badges pretty
soon. Our librarian Jason described in
detail de CD of the month. He also said
that there were still a set of the first CD
still available and that in the future he will
only take private request for the package.
The Q. & A. followed for
the next 25 minutes. The presentation for
the night was given by our own reliable Chuck
Hill
The next monthly meeting
will be held at the same place and time on Mar.
15 ‘06’
This month, due to club
member response, I've put together a games disk.
These are not demo versions of commercial games,
but rather the best that I could find of
freeware / shareware games that the Internet has
to offer.
Often when larger game demo's are released, you
can only get 3-4 game demo's on a CD before they
take up all the space.
I've tried to maximize the number of game
options on this CD, so hopefully there'll be
something for everyone. I know there is a
variety of action, puzzle, platform, and
strategy games, but I've also found some online
multiplayer games, that are free as well.
I've tried to categorize them by type, but some
of them tend to cover a couple of different
genre's, so I did the best I could with what I
have. There were a wide variety of
different games, many of them came from normal
shareware /adware/freeware sources, like PopCap
games, and Kewlbox, but others are from
independent producers that put out games as sort
of a resume' for prospective job offers, and
others just for the love to producing free, high
quality games for their personal enjoyment.
I found several games that
were produced in Japan or Korea, that had the
instructions translated, but I'm not sure how
complete they are. If there is some
confusion on these, I'm sorry for that, but
since I generally try to fill up a disk before
release, I have a bunch of games in this
release.
Also, I'm still updating the monthly program
updates, so you'll see updates on our usual
selection of spyware/adware/virus programs like:
Ad aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Avast,
AVG, CW Shredder, and CCleaner.
Also added updates for the Autopatcher program
as they are made available. This should be
a good update to include in our monthly program
selection. This program release is in
direct response to club member request.
I've not made a games release in awhile, due to
the low sales of my previous tries, but I
thought this might be a better solution that
just putting up game demo's. Please let me
know at the meeting if you like this release, or
what you think I should come out with that you
would like.
While working on sending out this newsletter I
soon discovered a XP app called
"Sticky Keys" was installed in my XP PRO
I had no idea of what key combinations I used to
activate nor how to shut it down. All I know is
it deactivated my keyboard functions completely.
My mouse worked..thank God
Naturally I couldn't use
Ctrl+Alt+Delete to shut down any
suspicious app.
After freakin going nuts trying to troubleshoot
WHY my keyboard wasn't working by doing
the usual tech support dance of turn on , turn
off my pc, unplug, plug back in, my usb
keyboard. Then unplug the usb keyboard and
plug-in in a serial keyboard, still nothing.
So I started going through every program icon
down in my sys tray. And there it is ,
'XP's sticky Keys'. Now I've never used
this app, so I didn't
know how to use it. So I started clicking
off the enabled setting till my keyboard started
working....problem solved. WoooHooo!
On a different note make sure you come see the
demo on
'Cybercrime' it will be one of the best
practical demos yet. I talked with Bob Young and
this demo will be a multimedia presentation with
movie clips, lecture and how to tips of what
your options are to prevent and / or God forbid
recover from a 'cybercrime' against you.
Apparently the installer fails to clean
its log files and leaves
them readable to all users. The bug
has been fixed, and only
affects The 5.10 Breezy Badger release.
Ubuntu users, be sure to get the patch
right away."
