We elect our officers every November. Most of our current board members are
running for their offices again, but, we do have a few slots that were left open
when Diane and Chuck left for greener pastures, so, I’ll go over the positions
and who is running for them now…
Position Nominees are:
President: Mike Taphorn
V.P.:
Jim Tomlinson
Secretary: Carlos Mariles
Membership: Chairman J.C. Spelce
Librarian: Jason Whitener
Treasurer: Charles Wallace
Webmaster: Steven
Newsletter Editor:
or Bob Butz
If you want to run for any of these positions, please come to the November
meeting and let us know. We are always looking for fresh ideas...
DEMONSTRATION
Shawn Travers, from Microsoft, is going to be our guest presenter. The last time
he gave a demo, he handled himself and all of the anti-Microsoft sentiment /
jokes that came his way with aplomb. He has promised another good demo and
you'll have to wait until the meeting to find out what it is going to cover.
It's not a secret, it's just that I don't know what he is going to cover...I
think he is bringing more Microsoft prizes too. Make sure you attend and be
polite. He is a guest...
HOLIDAY PARTY PRIZES
We're starting to gather up the prizes. Let me know if you can help out with the
rebate items or if you have something to donate to the Holiday Party give-away
extravaganza.

Monthly Updates
To Be Included
In Every
Monthly GCC CDrom of Freeware
by Jason Whitener / GCC
Librarian
First, I announced at the last Board of Directors meeting that I was going to
release an update of frequently used programs on each disk release. You can call
this a bootstrap, or Jason's monthly update or whatever, but regardless it will
contain the newest versions on the most requested/needed programs that seem to
be needed every single month.
Programs like Spybot Search and Destroy,
Ad-Aware,
Avast,
AVG,
Microsoft's
AntiSpyware beta, are requested every month, and rather than dig into the disk
releases from previous months, I decided that I'd update the file section with
the latest versions of these programs, so each release will have the latest
version of each piece of software. Most of the time I'm putting the disks
together a few days before burning them, so I should be able to get the most
updated versions prior to the disk release.
Admittedly this will take up some space on each disk release, but since I
struggle to fill up the releases most of the time anyway, I think this is a
small price to pay for having these often used programs at our fingertips each
month. So each month, prior to burning the disk release for the month, I'll get
online and update this file section, deleting older versions and adding programs
as newer programs become available. If anyone has any suggestions for what all
you'd like to see in this section, let me know.
Second, I've not gotten much of a backlog of responses as to what disks you'd
like to see. I've gotten some help from Chuck Hill as to some tech podcast
programming that I can add to the monthly disk release, as well as some good new
tools. Generally, I bring a note book to both the BOD and general club meetings to
write down notes, so if you have any suggestions or ideas as to what you'd like
to see in the next few disk releases, please let me know.
The game support disk I put together a few months ago was a bit of a flop,
selling 6 or so copies, so I'll stay away from game stuff unless someone
requests something. My big issue is that since I'm spending my time putting
together something for a disk release, I want to make sure it's something that
another club member will get some benefit from.
I realize many of you buy the disk of the month, and it sits on the shelf,
untouched until you realize that you may have a copy of a program that you need
on that disk, months later. That's what I want for the disk release. I like to
put together releases that are functional, or potentially so. I know everyone
will not pour over each disk, but it's good to know that I'm doing this for a
reason. I know that the disks will probably get a lot more use now, if for no
other reason than, they now have the updated virus/spyware/Trojan scanning
software on them.
Lastly, I hope to see you all at the club meeting, and I hope to have a robust
disk release for you. I'm having some computer problems right now, so we'll have
to see as to what I can get put together. Probably going to be more of the
portable programs, as many new ones have cropped lately.
This is my last GCC Newsletter, UNLESS I'm elected. So if you like this new look, I'd appreciate your
vote. ( Sorry Bob, I couldn't resist. )
Also, I was wondering if the membership would like to see polls & surveys added
to the monthly newsletter. It could be used to find out what you'd like to see
for up and coming demos, events or other club related issues....just another
idea of how I could possibly improve on the use of this newsletter.
I'd now like to give a plug to the Computer Room in Fairview Heights,
IL. If any of you have NOT been to their store yet, please do so. I think you'll be
surprised at the service you will get, the variety of the pc hardware on hand and the
very low service charges for most pc repairs etc. I believe co-owner Kara
maybe
coming again to our Xmas Party bearing gifts. If not her, a representative will
most likely show up. Their store number is 618.398.3000 </plug> - Dennis
