COMPUTER FIXING AND SWAP MEET IN THE DARK

 Well, I've been to a lot of meetings over the last 22 years, but, none quite like our last meeting. I got a call that the power went out about an hour before the meeting was to start. Not knowing what to do or if we could do anything, I grabbed the stuff I had to sell and a few flashlights and headed for the hall. The lights were out, but, everyone pitched in and they were setting up their tables by flashlight when I arrived. The lights came on about an hour after we started the meeting and it ended up as a pretty successful swap-meet and computer fixing session. Thanks to everyone that shared their lights and I hope we don't have that problem again for another 22 years...

 PROGRESSIVE RAFFLE IS STARTING OVER

 The Progressive Raffle Prize was finally given away at the last meeting. I believe the prize was $325... I didn't win, so, we're going to do it again...

 The raffle will start out with $100 prize and all 52 regular cards + the joker will be in the deck of cards. The odds are pretty good that we will not take as long to give away this jackpot so make sure you get your tickets. If we draw your number, you will win the $25 cash prize or one of the prizes I'll be bringing. After you pick out your prize, you get to draw a card from the deck and see if you can pull the joker for the $100 progressive raffle prize... Good Luck...

 APRIL DEMO

 Bob Borders of Borders Technical Services is going to be our presenter this month. He works in the networking field and he is going to go over all the different aspects of networking from small home networks to large corporate Intranets. If you have any networking questions, bring them along with you to the meeting and Bob will try to get them answered.  If you know a lot about networks, come to the meeting and help Bob answer some of the questions. This is Bob's first time presenting to the club, so , be nice...

GCC Minutes 

President Mike Taphorn opened the meeting punctually at 7 PM.  As usual he welcomed the membership, the new members and the attending guests.  He proceeded to thank all those who attended the computer show to assist the club during the 4th, 5th and 6th of March.  Mike notified the members of the different programs and sites to visit when they are in the internet.  He obtains this information by reading articles in different magazines.

The Prez. continued to explain the way the door prize works for the club that night.  Finally, president Taphorn went to the Q & A session that lasted about 20 minutes.  Afterwards he explained to the membership that due to a power failure, working in their individual problems might not be possible due to the power outage.  Yes, we had the meeting with lots of flashlights pointed at the ceiling.  The outage lasted for about fifteen minutes more and then came back on to the delight of the membership.  Amazingly about 95% of the membership decided to stay for the rest of the evening. 

The theme for the night was “swap meet” and as the membership found out there were lots of bargains and information that went on for the rest of the night.  

Our next club meeting will be held on April 20th at 7 PM at the same location.

Google Doubles E-Mail Space

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - A year after unveiling a free e-mail service with a full gigabyte of storage, Google Inc. (GOOG) is doubling the capacity of each account and plans to keep bumping up the limit in the future.

Once the upgrade takes effect Friday, Gmail users will be able to store up to 2 gigabytes of e-mail and attachments for each account. Even more capacity will be made available after that as it becomes feasible, the company said.

Google Feature Incorporates Satellite Maps

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Online search engine leader Google has unveiled a new feature that will enable its users to zoom in on homes and businesses using satellite images, an advance that may raise privacy concerns as well as intensify the competitive pressures on its rivals.

The satellite technology, which Google began offering late Monday at , is part of the package that the Mountain View-based company acquired when it bought digital map maker Keyhole Corp. for an undisclosed amount nearly six months ago.http://maps.google.com

This marks the first time since the deal closed that Google has offered free access to Keyhole's high-tech maps through its search engine. Users previously had to pay $29.95 to download a version of Keyhole's basic software package.

A more traditional map will continue to be the first choice served up by Google's search engine. Users will have the option of retrieving a satellite picture by clicking on a button.

The satellite maps could unnerve some people, even as the technology impresses others. That's because the Keyhole technology is designed to provide close-up perspective of specific addresses.

Keyhole's previous government ties also have raised anxieties.

Founded in 2001, Keyhole raised some money in 2003 from In-Q-Tel, a venture capital firm backed by the Central Intelligence Agency. Leading up to the Google sale, Keyhole's roughly 10,000 customers included a cross-section of government agencies.

There is little reason for people to be paranoid about the satellite maps because the images generally are six to 12 months old, said John Hanke, Keyhole's general manager. "And it's not like you are going to be able to read a license plate on a car or see what an individual was doing when a particular image was taken," he said.

Google believes most people will like the convenience of generating a satellite image with a few clicks of a computer mouse. The company envisions people using the service as a way to scout a hotel's proximity to the beach for a possible vacation or size up the neighborhood where an apartment is for rent.

Google's free satellite maps initially will be limited to North America, with images covering roughly half the United States, Hanke said.

Although Google is offering the satellite maps on a test basis, the feature will probably force its other online rivals to upgrade their technology, predicted search industry analyst Greg Sterling of the Kelsey Group. "To play in this space, you are going to need some robust mapping capabilities."

Sterling said Google's satellite maps pose the biggest threat to Mapquest, a service owned by Time Warner Corp. that has long operated the most popular Web site for finding directions.

The satellite maps also up the ante for the many challengers chipping away at Google's share of the lucrative Internet search engine market by adding more bells and whistles. For instance, Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN)'s A9 search engine earlier this year introduced a feature that includes an index containing 20 million street-level photographs of building exteriors in 10 major U.S. cities.
