The GCC Christmas Party

Hello From The Pres...
Mike Taphorn

 ANOTHER SHOW SUCCESS!

We had another successful computer show. I’d like to thank everyone who showed up to work the booth. Even though we didn’t have a lot of names on the sign-up sheet, we had just enough people to get it done.  We did sign up 13 new members and 3 old members renewed. All in all the Show was a success for us. The next show will be in December, just in time for Christmas… THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP !!!

MAC DEMO

This month we are going to do something a little different. We have a guest speaker who is going to show us about Macintosh computers. He is a friend of mine named, Jason Fischer. He works with me and he has a MAC laptop and an IPOD and lots of other fun gizmos. It gives our usual demo givers a break and we get to see what Steve Jobs has been up to lately. Please make sure you make it to this meeting so you can see what a MAC looks like nowadays. They aren’t tiny little black-and-white boxes anymore…

SEPTEMBER DEMO IS LINUX &  OCTOBER IS EBAY

This is one of the first times in history that we have had three months worth of demos determined in advance so I had to write about it….

Since we had a guest speaker scheduled for August, we figured that we might as well get a few more. Leonard and Chuck Hill are our normal demo presenters, but we’re trying to give them a rest…

The September demo will be an introduction to Linux. The Hill's are going to introduce us to that operating system. The main presenter will be Walter with Chuck and Leonard helping. If we can get Rodger involved, we will have an all Hill Demo. (Note! only Leonard and Chuck are related). I did hear that we are going to have many flavors of Linux available on CD for the club members to buy for a buck each. The October Demo is going to be presented by Dennis McMurtrey. He has a lot of fun and makes a lot of money using Ebay. He has a lot of great tips and tricks to teach us… I might even share some of my experiences.....Then you will know what not to do too.

Make sure you make it to the next three meetings so you don’t miss the great demos we have scheduled…

BY-LAWS

I saved the boring part for last. Everyone knows how much I hate formal business stuff that makes the meetings boring, but I think we have the final touches completed on our revised set of BYLAWS. We also have a revised Constitution for everyone to review. We are going to have them available at the meeting and give everyone a while to review them and then we have to have an official vote to get them passed by the general membership. This will not be very painful, because all we did was rewrite them to match what we currently do. I’m sure it will go smoothly… Click here to view the New Constitution   and the   New By-Laws   ( Note Acrobat PDF reader required to view these files.)

See you at the meeting …

The Secretary's Report
Carlos Mariles

Well here we go,

President Mike Taphorn opened the meeting at 7 PM. For the benefit of all new members and guests, he explained briefly how the computer club functions. He explained to the rest of the 59 regular members present the complicated procedure that the board members and the by-laws committee had gone through in order to accomplish the final discussion, acceptance and vote by the general membership at a very near future. Mike passed the floor to J.C., our membership chairman, who explained the importance of obtaining legible information i.e. names, e-mail addresses, etc while collecting applications during the August computer show in Collinsville, IL. He also stated that our current number of club members is at 198. Our usual Q & A continued for the next 25 minutes.

We then continued with the door prizes, and member Harold Coleman won the coveted 50/50. The presentation for the night was given by Mr. Leonard Hill and the topic was “Using Your Flatbed Scanner”. He explained the different tricks to using your scanner in order to get better scanned image. Mr. Hill went further on to explain in detail the use of different programs to improve and print what you scan. His presentation was well thought, developed and presented. Kudos and accolades followed at the end of the session and most members were discussing the strong probability that it could be considered for an Oscar.

The next club meeting will be held at the same place at 7 PM on Aug. 20, 03.

The Web Master

Here is some advice on using the list server.

1. When you send email to the listserver, please use "GCC" as the beginning of the subject line for easy reference.
This allows easier sorting and filing for GCC information emails.
GCC - POST - COMPUTER SHOW THIS WEEK!
GCC - QUESTION - YATA YATA?
     GCC - RE:QUESTION - YATA YATA?
2. Send all questions to the list server and not to the officers email account you find on the website or the newsletter.
Send your message to: gcc@htc.net This address is a hot link.
Sending your questions to any other address is just going to slow down response because
we have resend your question to the list server.
Note these instructions come from the website....Please consult them before sending emails to the list server.

Aerial Digital Photography from a Balloon for Fifty Dollars

Taking photographs from the air is theoretically straightforward. There are two things you need to do. You need to get the camera in the air, and then you need to trigger the shutter. To trigger the shutter, there are basically three options: mechanically triggering the shutter from the air, electronically triggering the shutter from the air, and using the camera's built-in timer to trigger the shutter from the air. To get the camera in the air, there are basically three options: a balloon, a kite, and a rocket. Click on the above link to learn more about using a balloon.

Volunteers Needed

I need four volunteers for the Linux demo. We want to give Linux distributions to four members at the August meeting. They need to take them home and use them and report back their experience back to us. NO, you do not have to stand up in front of the group and talk. We want 10 the 20 sentences about your experience to put in an article in the newsletter. You can email them to me or give me a phone call and I will write it up. Don't worry about spelling and grammar and all that stuff. I can take care of those problems. One of the trial distributions will run directly from your CD ROM drive. You do not have to put anything on your computer. Your computer must be capable of booting from the CD ROM drive. The second distributions will require you to install it on your hard drive. You will need either a second hard drive or a spare machine to load it on. It will wipe out your existing operating system. Note.....we do not plan to provide you with any technical support for either process. We want to know your experience trying to use LINUX, not ours...

Email Problems Persist

For the Computer Show reminder I went back to the database and created a complete new mailing list. When I used it instead of my edited and pieced together list, there were 31 bad email addresses. These need to be fixed. If you are not getting regular emails about meetings and other reminders, from gcc-newsletter@charter.net, you need to contact our membership chairman and get your address fixed. DO NOT send corrections to me.
Send them to JC Spelce at  jspelce@apci.net.

Mac's World for Aug/03

 MS Blaster......aka....."The Worm"

Here is the EZ definitive guide to this whole mess, thanks to Bob Young of PConsite.us for fix instructions. Hope this clears up everyone's questions.

Google 101....Learn how to use it.

There are a lot of search engines on the Web, but Google is by far and away the most popular because of its accuracy. When you search for a word or phrase you're not just thrown 30,000 random links to explore. Instead, Google ranks pages so the most popular, and presumably best, are listed first. What gets pages there? It's the number of other sites that have linked to them, and the quality of those sites. Google considers a link from page A to page B as a vote for page B. But beyond that, it also ranks the page that links. Links from sites that are themselves more highly ranked weigh more heavily.

Thinking about buying a DVD recorder?

Consumer Alert-There's Not Much on the Plus Side of DVD+
==============================
I was just reading about Toshiba's new portable DVD players that will play slide shows of JPEG images provided the DVD's are burned on DVD- drives.

I queried them about this and they confirmed that DVDs burned on DVD+ drives (all Dell drives) will NOT play on these players. That means that not only I but everyone who might want to send me discs would have to burn them on a DVD- drive. What are the chances of that?

Toshiba, and others like them are shafting you and me as a way to win the DVD-/DVD+ battle. Your only response should be to boycott them and their deliberately limited products. This isn't my first negative experience. Since we burn a lot of CDs for our eBooks, I assumed I was going to get a real deal on blank DVD discs when I bought them from my supplier in bulk.

After buying a Dell we called to order a few hundred DVD+ discs and our suppliers response was "We don't carry those, the duplication industry has all gone DVD-." I'm feeling increasingly screwed by this industry and both Dell and I are on the loosing side.

Apple carried only DVD- drives so I should have known better. If you are buying DVD equipment of any kind, you better know the + and - sides of the DVD issue!! I'll be posting more on this on my site late

No more AOL CDs

You probably haven't actually wrapped your choppers around an AOL CD like this unhappy direct-mail victim to the left, but we suspect you've felt like it. Before you toss the next unsolicited signup disk in the trash (or fantasize about feeding it to Fido), consider sending it to No More AOL CDs! This online compendium of disdain has gathered nearly 200,000 discs from around the world, just 800,000 shy of the CD-haters' goal. Browse funny photos, lists of top contributors and fast AOL CD facts, and find out how you can contribute. Check out this site for some imaginative uses for those disk too.

Did you know?

1,000,000 Unwanted AOL CDs stacked on top of each other would be taller than 3 Empire State buildings.

And, 1,000,000 Unwanted AOL CDs laid end to end would stretch about 75 mi
